‘Helping Mothers Survive’ Successive Trainings organized jointly by UNFPA, Ministry of health of Uzbekistan and LDS Charities

Urgench city (1-8 April 2019) and Bukhara city (10-13 April 2019) - UNFPA Uzbekistan Country Office and LDS Charities, International charity organization, convene another round of Trainings of Trainers for midwives and obstetricians-gynecologists aimed at improving of emergency obstetric care.
About 32 healthcare specialists will be trained as local trainers on two modules of “Helping Mothers Survive” (HMS) training program: 1) preventing bleeding after birth (BAB) and 2) on management of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia (P-E/E) before referral to hospital.

In 2015, UNFPA Country Office in Uzbekistan and Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan established a good cooperation with LDS Charities aiming to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality. Preventing bleeding after birth (BAB) module developed by JHPIEGO (international non-profit health organization affiliated with Johns Hopkins University) and implemented worldwide where the midwifery work is critical and contributes to save lives of mothers and newborns, aims at provision of comprehensive set of skills for prevention and treatment of post-partum hemorrhage, a condition that still accounts for approximately one fourth of maternal deaths worldwide. Since 2015, when the BAB training was successfully introduced in Uzbekistan, it covered around 2000 obstetrician-gynecologists and midwives of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, Kashkadarya, Samarkand, Bukhara, Fergana, Andijan, Namangan, Tashkent provinces and Tashkent city.

In 2018, another ‘Helping Moher Survive’ module, namely management of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia (P-E/E) before referral to hospital, was introduced within the framework of the existing cooperation. Pre-eclampsia is a life-threatening disorder characterized by high blood pressure and protein in the urine (proteinuria), which occurs only during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Undiagnosed and unmanaged cases of pre-eclampsia can rapidly progress to eclampsia (convulsions/fits)—the deadliest form of the condition. Globally, severe pre-eclampsia/eclampsia (P-E/E) is the second leading cause of pregnancy-related mortality, resulting in 63,000 deaths each year. PE/E can also lead to long-term or permanent disability among women. However, the majority of PE/E caused deaths are avoidable through the timely provision of effective care.

About 32 health care specialists will be trained as local trainers on two modules of “Helping Mothers Survive” training program: 1) preventing bleeding after birth (BAB) and 2) on management of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia (P-E/E) before referral to hospital. In the course of the Training of Trainers, besides the 32 local trainers, another 200 healthcare specialists will be trained on P-E/E management and 90 healthcare specialists will be trained on BAB prevention.

These trainings are an example of successful and expanded partnership initiative of UNFPA, Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan and LDS Charities in their commitment to support safe motherhood.
