Tashkent, Uzbekistan- May 12, 2011 — United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan, «Civil Initiatives Support Centre» (CISC) NGO and National Centre for Human Rights joined hands in conducting a roundtable discussion on draft law aimed at ensuring equal rights and opportunities for men and women.

The meeting emphasized the role of national legislation in developing of the necessary institutional and legal mechanisms for full realization of women’s rights in the country.

The revised draft of the Law «On guarantees of equal rights and equal opportunities of men and women» was discussed. UNFPA has been actively involved in developing of the draft law since 2009, with advocacy efforts and support to national lawmaking process. Recently, with UNFPA’s support, the draft has been reviewed by international expert, so the meeting was aimed at reviewing and discussing the expert’s recommendations for improvement of the draft document.

Representatives of the Parliament of Uzbekistan, other relevant national institutions, international organizations, educational and scientific institutions, NGOs and mass-media participated in the event, actively contributing to discussion. Participants agreed that development of the law is timely for further enhancing of the legislative environment for gender equality in Uzbekistan. The reviewed draft will be submitted for further processing to law-making bodies.

In recent years, the government of Uzbekistan has focused on improvement of legislative base for women’s equality in all spheres of life. In particular, it was mentioned that, with introduction of new electoral system and establishment of 30% quota for women candidates of political parties, socio-political activity of women and their participation in state and social construction was improved. The new regulation allowed for electing of 33 women in the lower house in 2009. Women comprise 15% of Senate members, whereas local representative bodies employ more than 20% of women out of the total number of deputies.
