27-30 March 2012 – 4-day training covering the issues of prevention and settlement of family conflicts, family relationships and international legislation in the field of equality and prevention of domestic violence is being held in Tashkent. UN Population Fund (UNFPA), Civic Initiatives Support Centre (CISC), Women’s Committee and National Association of NGOs of Uzbekistan have joined hands to organize this training.
Training named “Equality – Key to Wellbeing and Peace in Families” is held within a framework of state programmes and priorities, including Government’s concept on Further strengthening of democratic reforms and development of civil society of year 2010, as well as Programme of “The Year of Strong Family” announced in Uzbekistan this year.

Among participants are representatives of women’s and youth organizations, community leaders, members of NGOs working in the area of social and legal protection of women and children. The learning event is designed to deliver to participants the main aspects of prevention of family conflicts and disputes, and their peaceful settlement, including by means of mediation. Community leaders and women’s organizations are usually those who deal with this kind of conflicts, and it is, therefore, very important for them to have the necessary knowledge and skills to competently address these issues.

Thus, it is expected that the training will contribute to forming the required skills in identifying the cases of domestic violence, and choosing effective methods of their settlement and prevention. Participants will also learn about legislative norms in the role and activities of so-called “conciliatory commissions” established in makhallyas. The training includes interactive sessions to help participants practice what they have learned, such as, for example, “Portrait of Happy Family” exercise, session on “Mediator’s Ethical Code” and others. In addition, one day of the training will be fully dedicated to developing trainers’ skills, so that participants could convey their knowledge to larger audience back in their institutions and communities.

This training of trainers is part of UNFPA’s larger work on promoting equality of rights and opportunities for men and women in Uzbekistan.
