"How quarantine impacted family relations" survey conducted on "No to violence" Telegram Channel

On 4 June we laucned a questionnaire titled “How quarantine affected family relationships in Uzbekistan?” on “No to violence!” Telegram channel which was created under the auspices of the Commission on Gender Equality of the Republic of Uzbekistan with the support of UNFPA in Uzbekistan, at the start of quarantine and lockdown measures in the country.

The questionnaire was attended by 3730 subscribers of our channel.

Analysis of the questionnaire results showed the following:

  • 71% of respondents said that during quarantine their family relations strengthened
  • 27% mentioned increased disputes among family members leading to violence cases in families
  • 61% voiced increased fathers' involvement into childcare and education of children
  • 33% noted increased misunderstanding and conflicts between husband and wife
  • 22% noted the disputes between the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law
  • 44% mentioned that nothing has changed in family relationships.

The questionnaire shows that for many families (71%) quarantine period during pandemic, when all family members were forced to stay at home, favorably influenced their relationship. Fathers have become more attentive to the learning of their children. But, unfortunately, cases of domestic violence increased as noted by 27% of respondents. This is a high rate. Interviewees also noted an increase in the number of conflicts between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, husband and wife.
