The United Nations System in Uzbekistan supports the global call for the elimination of all forms of violence against women.
Every year, the campaign entitled “16 Days of Activism against gender based violence” is marked globally. It starts on the International Day against Violence against Women (25 November) and ends on the International Human Rights Day (10 December), symbolically linking these occasions together to send the message that violence against women is an act of violation against human rights.
In Uzbekistan, this campaign has been successfully implemented under the theme ‘From Peace in the Home to Peace in the Country’ since 2011, and international community, civil society and Government organizations come together to intensify efforts in support of women’s empowerment.
In 2016, the world embarked on a 15-year journey towards equitable, inclusive sustainable development through launching of the new development agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals. For the new development agenda to have a meaningful and positive impact, actions must be taken to break the cycle of violence against women that denies millions of women and girls their fundamental human rights and their ability to contribute to the economic and social progress of their nations.
“Worldwide, it is estimated that one in three women experiences physical or sexual abuse in her lifetime. Ending violence against women should be a priority for every human being. This is not only a women’s issue; it is a duty for all of us,” - said Stefan Priesner, UN Resident Coordinator in the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The UN system supports countries to prevent and respond to gender-based violence in more than 130 countries. One third of these countries are affected by crises, which exacerbate women and girls’ vulnerability. Globalprogrammatic and policy interventions address violence against women and girls to ensure sustainable development.
With the new global sustainable development goals, we have a collective responsibility to end violence against women and girls by 2030. All of us need to do more to leave no one behind. Every woman and girl has the right to live free of gender-based discrimination and violence. This is an imperative not only for the dignity, human rights and well-being of women and girls, but for our common humanity and our common future.
