Tashkent, 17 November 2014 - A roundtable and press conference to launch the annual ‘From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World’ International Action was held in Tashkent on November 17. The key goal of the events, organized by several UN Agencies including UNFPA, national public organizations and interested donors, is to draw public attention to and promote the protection of women’s rights.
This action in Uzbekistan will be part of a large scale campaign globally known as ’16 days of activism against violence against women’ and is held annually from November 25 to December 10. This campaign has been carried out by the United Nations jointly with international human rights organizations, NGOs, and activists promoting the liquidation of violence against women.
In Uzbekistan, the campaign is carried out under the motto ‘From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World’ to mark the following important Days: ‘International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women’ (November 25), ‘World AIDS Day’ (December 1), ‘International Day of Persons with Disabilities’ (December 3), ‘Uzbekistan’s Constitution Day’ (December 8) and ‘International Human Rights Day’ (December 10).
The campaign has started with a roundtable to provide its participants with recommendations on how to conduct the activities in Tashkent and across Uzbekistan.
On the same day, November 17, a press conference was organized with the UN agencies in Uzbekistan, OSCE Project Coordinator’s Office in Uzbekistan, Asian Development Bank, Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan, National NGOs Association (NANNOUz), Civil Initiatives Support Center, International ‘Kurash’ [National Wrestling] Association and ‘Uzbekistan-India’ Friendship Society.
Leaving no one behind means tackling inequalities and guaranteeing universal access to social services and social protection. Ensuring equal access to all segments of the population, both young and old, to education, income, and health care and basic social services enables people to live decently in the present and to save for the future.
The organizers have shared with the press the objectives of the campaign, various activities aimed to improve women’s status in Uzbekistan and strengthen their role in the public and state affairs, while also engaging the youth.
