UNFPA Uzbekistan Launches Training Program to Engage Men in Promoting Gender Equality and Preventing Violence

Fergana, Uzbekistan – 13 - 15 November, 2024

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Uzbekistan has launched a training program in Fergana aimed at preparing trainers to involve men in efforts to promote gender equality, prevent violence, and support positive expressions of masculinity in their communities. This initiative, funded by UK International Development from the UK government, supports UNFPA’s ongoing work to advance gender equality and reduce gender-based violence across Uzbekistan.

The training is designed to build a network of trainers who can engage men and boys in addressing gender stereotypes, encouraging mutual respect, and helping to prevent violence. Participants will explore topics such as gender roles and norms, principles of gender equality, methods for involving men in discussions on gender justice, and positive models of masculinity. Practical sessions will help them develop skills in communication, data analysis, event planning, strategic thinking, and dialogue.

This training is intended for NGO professionals, gender equality advocates, community leaders, and representatives of state organizations in the Fergana Valley. The Fergana Valley is the most densely populated region in Uzbekistan, home to over 10 million people - approximately 30% of the country's population. By focusing efforts here, the program aims to help participants shape more inclusive and respectful gender norms within their communities, potentially impacting a significant portion of the population.

The program uses a range of interactive methods, including group work, role-playing, case studies, and discussions. Participants will also have the opportunity to examine Uzbekistan's legislation related to gender equality, giving them a clearer understanding of the legal framework that supports these efforts nationally. Exercises like the "Path to the Country of Equality" allow participants to envision a society rooted in equality and collaboratively explore ways to address real-life challenges. These hands-on approaches not only help participants grasp gender equality concepts but also equip them to apply these principles effectively within their communities.

A dedicated session, “Gender Issues in Islam,” led by a representative from the International Islamic Academy of Uzbekistan, built on UNFPA's experience of engaging faith-based organizations to advance gender equality. This session revisited key principles on gender roles, rights, and responsibilities within Islamic teachings, clarifying authentic perspectives on gender and distinguishing them from cultural interpretations that often reinforce stereotypes and perceptions of inequality.

After completing the training, participants were equipped with tools to actively involve men in gender equality initiatives and create programs aimed at reducing gender-based violence. Participants also strengthened their confidence as trainers, allowing them to become advocates and change agents within their networks. With ongoing support, they are now prepared to implement and adapt their projects to meet the unique needs of their local communities.

Birodar Mirazaev, MenEngage programme expert shared, "When men get involved in changing gender norms, they become important allies in building a fairer society. We aim to equip them with the skills and confidence to make a difference." The training has been adapted to the specific cultural and social context of Uzbekistan, as well as the professional needs of participants, making it more effective and accessible for a range of community settings.

UNFPA Uzbekistan hopes this program will encourage community leaders to take action in fostering a safer, more inclusive environment for everyone.
