The Position:

The UNFPA Internship Program offers selected outstanding students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to UNFPA areas of work for a period of 6 months. It is designed to complement development-oriented studies with practical experience in various aspects of UNFPA work.

Under the direct supervision of the National Programme Analyst on Population Dynamics the intern will support the implementation of programme-related activities of the UNFPA Uzbekistan Country Office with the focus on communication and youth participation.

A work-plan for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be agreed upon. Periodic progress meetings will lead to a beneficial environment for the Intern enhancing her/his skills and capacity in areas related to UNFPAs mandate.

You would be responsible for:

 

  • To learn about UNFPA mandate, programmatic direction of work, become aware of projects implemented in Uzbekistan;
  • Contribution to Girls’ Empowerment programme to support youth needs awareness and responsiveness;
  • Provide substantive support to establishing youth peer network to raise capacities of the youth that will serve as change agents in empowering their peers to be actively involved in promoting a healthy lifestyle, accessing health information and services they need, advancing youth empowerment, participation, and leadership;
  • To create social media platform for the UNFPA Youth Network and maintain content in Uzbek, Russian and English. Transfer the knowledge and duties on the social media platform maintenance to the next intern upon completion of this internship; maintain contacts with Youth Network members; Coordinate meetings with network members.
  • Prepare communication materials (success stories, human stories etc.) and information on the results and impact of youth peer network functioning.
  • Assist in programme activities implementation;
  • Assist in collecting, registering and maintaining information on program activities;
  • Provide logistics support in UNFPA’s events;
  • Take part in trainings and meetings organized by UNFPA CO for its employees;
  • Performing other duties as required.

 

 

You Have:

Your Education:

 

Applicants to UNFPA’s internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

 

  1. Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher);
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent);
  3. Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (A) and (B) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation;
  4. Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship programme and undertake the internship as part of this programme.

 

Your Experiences:

 

  • Some experience in working with development agencies, including in volunteer capacity would be an asset.
  • Fluency in English, Russian and Uzbek.
  • Strong analytical and writing skills.
  • Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members from different national and cultural backgrounds.

 

Learning Elements:

Upon completion of the assignment, and depending on its duration, the Intern will gain the following knowledge assets:

  1. Increased understanding of the UNFPA and the Programme Division within UNFPA
  2. Understand the UNFPA mandate and policies, including regional set-up
  3. Understand and familiarize with UNFPA Governance and Executive Board 
  4. Understand UNFPA programme design and delivery mechanisms
  5. Understand the dynamics of operational and programme support and communications in the country
  6. Learn UN technical language, working procedures, and coordination mechanisms
  7. Write and formulate substantive documents
  8. Network with UN colleagues
  9. Work experience as a team member in a multicultural setting

 

Financial Aspects:

Interns do not receive a salary or any other form of remuneration from UNFPA. The costs associated with an intern's participation in the programme must be assumed either by the nominating institution, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students, or by the students themselves, who will have to meet living expenses as well as make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and other requirements.

However, they receive a stipend to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, if not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government, foundation, or scholarship programme.

The amount of the stipend varies according to the duty station. The stipend for Uzbekistan is 257.40 USD per month. In addition, applicants must have medical insurance for the duration of the internship. Proof of insurance will need to be submitted before the internship begins. UNFPA does not provide medical insurance for interns.
