TASHKENT - 14-18 August, 2023. On 14 August, a summer school on "Fundamentals of Demographic Analysis and Population Projections in Uzbekistan", organized by the United Nations Population Fund together with the scientific and practical research institute "Family and Women" and the A. Vishnevsky Institute of Demography started its work.

The aim of this summer school was to strengthen the capacity of young demographers to make demographic projections in Uzbekistan. The summer school gave participants an opportunity to expand their knowledge and improve their skills in the following areas: problems of demographic development in Uzbekistan, methods of demographic analysis, tasks and methods of demographic forecasting, cohort-component method of population forecasting, approaches to developing forecast scenarios, time series analysis using GRETL program, using ARIMA model to develop forecast scenarios, building forecast scenarios of fertility, mortality and migration using ARIMA model.

During the opening speech, Mr. Kamolkhon Inomkhodjaev, UNFPA Assistant Representative in Uzbekistan, expressed his hope that the summer school will be interesting and useful for young scientists and specialists. "This year we decided to focus our efforts on population projections and to assist in developing national capacity to build population projections in the Republic of Uzbekistan. Today's event is another important step towards building a network of young demographers in Uzbekistan."

Ms. Nodira Egamberdiyeva, Director of Scientific and Practical Research Institute "Family and Women" noted that "One of the important tasks of the Research Institute is to strengthen and develop the institution of family, attract highly qualified personnel in the field of protecting the rights and ensuring the interests of women, improving the database of scientists and experts in a particular field, training competitive scientists, including young specialists who meet modern requirements.Starting from 2021, the Institute conducts "Winter and Summer Schools", this summer school held in 2023 is the sixth one. The main objective of such schools is to develop the family institute, attract young scientists to the industry, share knowledge and experience, expand the expert and scientific base of the institute, form the necessary knowledge, skills and advanced training of participants within the topic of the event.

Leading scientists, professors and international experts in the field of demography took part in the summer school with reports and presentations.

In particular, on the first day of the summer school,  Anvarhuja Rustamovich Shoazizov, Senior Researcher of the Institute of Macroeconomic and Territorial Studies, delivered a report on "Problems of demographic development in Uzbekistan". In his presentation he told about the current demographic situation in our country and demographic threats to the country.

The summer school was a great success and participants gained a lot of knowledge and skills. They were able to learn from leading experts in the field of demography and to network with other young demographers.It was a valuable opportunity for young demographers to develop their skills and knowledge in the field of demographic analysis and population projections. It is also a great opportunity to build a network of young demographers in Uzbekistan.
