In May, UN Population Fund, jointly with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Health conducted series of training activities for healthcare professionals in three districts of Karakalpakstan. The training, carried out under the title “Medical eligibility criteria for various contraceptive methods, counseling and reproductive rights”, was designed for obstetrician-gynecologists, midwives and general practitioners of the region. More than 125 medical personnel could benefit from five 3-day workshops that provided in-depth coverage of various aspects of sexual and reproductive health and rights.
The training programme was designed in line with internationally-adopted medical procedures for contraceptive distribution and use, also approved by WHO (World Health Organization) and UNFPA. Participants got exposed to latest know-how in the area of medical eligibility for various contraceptive methods, and also practice their skills in providing medical services with regard to particular contraceptives use.
The issue of basic reproductive rights, as well as informed choice of family planning methods by client was particularly stressed in the training agenda. Medical workers could also sharpen their knowledge and skills in provision of before- and after-counseling, practical procedures on clients’ medical assessment, as well as follow-up care for clients with special needs, e.g. patients with medical disorders, such as anemia.
Sessions were conducted by two experienced medical professionals, at the training center of regional branch of Republican Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology in Nukus.
This training for medical practitioners is part of UNFPA’s broad initiative that targets improving of quality of sexual and reproductive health services in the region. It is being carried out within the frameworks of UN Joint Programme “Sustaining Livelihoods Affected by Aral Sea Disaster” that started earlier this year, with support of UN Trust Fund on Human Security.
Earlier in 2011 UN Population Fund supported publishing of various informational materials for visitors and medical workers of rural health clinics in Karakalpak language. Materials mainly covered the issues of informed choice, and reproductive rights, including family planning rights, with specific tips for counselors, and information for general population.
